Outdoor air quality in Smart City

SMART CITY is a city that uses smart technologies to make the critical infrastructure components and services of the city (including public administration, education, environment, healthcare, public safety, transportation and utilities) more intelligent, interconnected and efficient, with the aim of becoming more sustainable, fair and livable. A Smart City is therefore a city that guarantees a good quality of life for its inhabitants, and air quality is one of the most important indicators, since it has direct and evident effects on the health of the community.

Smog is one of the main problems related to air quality. It is composed of typical environmental pollutants, such as: Particulate Matter, NOx, VOC, O3, Benzene (an officially recognized carcinogen, included in the parameters to be monitored, according to the European Air Quality Directive 2008/50EC) and other compounds, which are emitted into the ambient air from multiple urban and industrial sources and activities.

However City workers can understand and improve air quality conditions only if pollutants are measured, monitored, and managed with precision. The equipment currently in use for monitoring these pollutants is very expensive, cumbersome, and requires continuous maintenance. Furthermore, although these technologies produce very accurate data, they provide a limited amount of information for an overall evaluation of the smog and its dispersion.

It is possible to overcome these limitations by integrating the existing monitoring network with Smart technologies: inexpensive, compact, reliable and always connected, for a more realistic assessment of the problem.

Having air quality and environmental parameters under control means protecting the environment and human health.

AQS1 is a compact air quality monitoring system designed to measure the main components of photochemical smog, PM2.5 and O3, and to monitor impacting activities such as urban construction and vehicular traffic. It can also be configured to measure other particulate fractions (TSP, PM10), NO2 and VOC, noise and weather parameters.

AQM65 is a totally customisable air quality monitoring station that measures several air pollutants, including O3, NO2, NOX, CO, SO2, VOC, H2S, CO2, dust (TSP, PM10, PM2.5, PM1), noise and weather parameters, ensuring accurate and real-time measurements of environmental status and possible sources of pollution.

PyxisGC BTEX is the first and unique gaschromatograph “carrier gas free” that allows remote and real-time monitoring of Benzene, a carcinogenic compound, and other health-impacting substances such as Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes, in compliance with EN14662- 3: 2015.

  • Vehicle Traffic Monitoring (restricted traffic zone, road junction, pedestrian underpasses, Urban Street Canyon…)
  • Monitoring sensitive places in urban centers (schools, hospitals, city parks, bus stops..)
  • Impact of neighboring industrial areas
  • Port and airport areas monitoring
  • Data integration on a city smart platform
